Spacious portals
Katie’s paintings create a sense of physical space, both for the artist and for the observer, with the motif of unbroken horizon occupying a strong, almost universal place in her canvases. Thin layers of color meticulously applied to her canvases build depth and translucence in the imagined landscapes. She creates work that viewers can develop a relationship with; spacious portals of expansiveness that nourish and mirror the vastness of soul.
About the Artist
Katie paused her private practice with clients after the birth of her daughter in 2004, to focus on her own healing of postpartum depression. Following her therapist’s advice to find something that fed her soul, she propelled herself back into painting. An inherent longing for beautiful views catalyzed her signature abstracted land and sea scapes.
“I painted these landscapes to give myself a sense of open space that did not exist outside our urban home, or inside of myself at that time - a space of deep breath and quieted thoughts.”
The ongoing series evolved to become a nuanced visual record of ever-evolving motherhood, depicting both a perpetual yearning for inner stillness, and an approaching horizon point where past and future meet. Within a year, Katie was exhibiting and selling her work, quickly gaining recognition among collectors and galleries.
